These trees are reclaimed from a unique source: very old fence posts from a ranch near Lusk, Wyoming. While most posts are cedar, these were discovered to be pine and fir—species that typically rot quickly. Their survival for decades in the ground is due to a fascinating natural phenomenon:
Fire Survival: Early ranchers discovered that trees surviving forest or grass fires produced an excess of pitch as a healing response.
Natural Preservation: This high pitch content created a wood that is naturally waterproof and incredibly durable.
The Artisan's Challenge: Decades of Wyoming sun and wind have hardened this material. While it is "incredibly annoying" and difficult to turn on a lathe, the struggle is worth it for the striking, amber-hued finished product.
